Ethical issues
Although scientific research has created considerable collective benefits, it has also posed some disquieting ethical questions. The importance of ethics is to guide the conduct of research surrounding human subjects and develop guidelines based on values that have been identified.
The “Belmont Report” published in 1979 by the National Commission for the protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research identified three basic principles related to research subjects. Respect for Persons entails that research subjects should have autonomy and self-determination. Beneficence ensures the protection of all research subjects from harm. Lastly, Justice which requires for all research subjects to receive fair treatment (The Belmont Report, 1979).
The plan to protect human rights includes reassuring participants that their anonymity and confidentiality will be respected. Participants will be assigned an identification code that will match their name. All data collected will be securely stored in a website, accessible only by investigator. Participants will be made aware of their voluntary participation in the study and right to withdraw from the study at any time.
Limitations and Implications
Limitations of the study include the delivery of educational brochure with an unknown number of women not receiving the educational brochure. It is also possible that the brochure were not recognized among other flyers and publicity. in addition, the women were chosen from a residential neighborhood with a high level of education and socioeconomic status. Therefore, the feasibility of these interventions for women living in rural areas with different levels of education and socioeconomic status is unknown. In addition, the results of this study cannot be generalized to a larger population as they apply only to the American women who attend the Catholic Church Educational class embraces the potential as an effective method of helping American women learn about values and necessity of BRCA screening.
