Evaluation of managerial decision making in professional sports teams
choose to write about one of the following three topics.
1. Evaluation of managerial decision making in professional sports teams is an important area of research in sports economics and analytics. Examples of such decisions are: whether to sack a head coach after a poor performance; whether to buy new players in the January transfer market; or, if and when a player should be substituted in a football game. Propose a managerial decision to consider and discuss its relevance in sports business and management. Explain how you would evaluate decisions made, proposing a regression model (or an alternative analytical approach). If possible, provide evidence of your conclusions and argument based on data.
2. Consider the introduction of a salary cup in football. Explain, using economic intuition, what the expected effect of the salary cap would be on:
a) the finance of football,
b) competitive balance, and
c) quality of the game.
Discuss how you would estimate these effects using a regression analysis. Provide a general conclusion about the advantages and disadvantages of a salary cap.
3. Discuss the consequences of Financial Fair Play rules on: i) performance of teams,
ii) competitive balance in national leagues, and in the European Champions League, and
iii) club profits.
Provide evidence of the impact of similar measures in other sports or countries. Explain a regression model (or any other analytical approach) that you could use to estimate these impacts.
