Experimental Research

Experimental research is when the researcher arranges their experiment to trial new
medications, treatment, interventions and the reaction that they have on the population (Helbig, 2018).

This article uses experimental research to evaluate the use of morphine on patients’ post-operative recovery
from hip and knee arthroplasty to decrease postoperative nausea and vomiting. This experiment is to evaluate
a new medication during the procedure to evaluate the reaction of the population being studied.
Quasi-experimental Research: “A quasi-experimental study does not use any form of randomization but looks
for a causal relationship between receiving a treatment and not receiving a treatment” (Helbig, 2018).

This study is a quasi-experimental study because it is testing the use of concomitant psychotropic medication
(CPM) vs no CPM on patients seeking
treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Nonexperimental Research: Nonexperimental research “looks at the association or relationship between
variables” (Helbig, 2018). This differs from the other two forms of research because there is not new
introduction being done to the study. The researchers are not introducing any new events, medication, or
actions into the experiment.

This journal uses nonexperimental research on the random relationship between the divorce rate and a
couple’s margarine intake. This is nonexperimental research because nothing new is being done, rather the
relationship between increased margarine intake shows an increased risk of divorce rates between couples.
This study is trying to find out if there is a relationship between these two variables.
