Film & Theater studies CRITICAL MOVIE REVIEW Investigate the cultural messages about sexuality and sex roles by watching and critically evaluating a contemporary movie (in the theater or on videotape) using the following questions. Type your 3-4 page review, using a separate paragraph for your answers to each question. (Adapted from Sayad & Janowiak) All papers must be typed, double spaced, with one inch margins and in 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Papers are to have a cover page with the title of your paper, your name, date the paper is due, the name of the class, and day and time when your class meets (e.g., Monday/Wednesday 2:00-3:20). The Scoring Rubric is to be attached after the last page of your paper. Section I (This section should be no more than 2 pages) 1. Briefly describe the movie’s plot (This description of the plot should be no more than 3/4 of a page of your review). 2. Briefly describe the lead characters, focusing on physical and personality characteristics. Include a description of the values each character placed on sexuality. In what ways were the lead characters similar to and different from any people you know in real life that hold the same occupation, social status, etc.? In other words, were the characters realistic? 3. How did the movie portray the leading female actors? Were there any sex-role stereotypes? If so, what were they? If not, how did these actors differ from the stereotypes? 4. How did the movie portray the leading male actors? Were there any sex-role stereotypes? If so, what were they? If not, how did these actors differ from the stereotypes? 5. Do you think the lead characters would make good parents? Why or why not? Section II (This section should be at least 2 pages.) Select a character from the movie. 6. Consider your character’s issue(s)/problem(s) as related to pertinent information or concepts addressed in your text. What is the problem/issue your character is facing? Is the problem typical of problems faced in real life? What factors might contribute to the problems? How realistic is the conclusion/solution to the problem? How do the problems and solutions compare to information in your text? 7. What purpose(s) did sex serve for the character? Are these purposes common in our society? Why or why not? 8. How did sex/sexuality make your character’s life better or worse? 9. In what ways was the movie representative of American culture and society? In what ways was the movie not representative of American culture and society? In what ways was the movie representative of other cultures? What cultural factors relating to sex were portrayed in this film? 10. What implicit and explicit messages does your movie contain about sex and sexuality? What do you think about the messages? Are they positive or negative? What age do you think it is appropriate for a child/teen to watch this movie? What guidelines, if any, might you put in place? 11. What was the underlying moral and/or philosophical view depicted in this movie? 12. How has this movie and/or writing the review expanded your understanding of human sexuality (for yourself or others)?
