Your essay should respond to one of the following prompts: Explain the challenge to the idea of “human nature” posed by the fact that human beings evolved and are continuing to evolve. Is it still possible to believe in “human nature”? Naomi Zack applies philosophical analysis to the AAA Statement on “Race.” What are her central arguments? Do you find them convincing? The Extended Cognition (EC) or Extended Mind thesis denies that each process of cognition must be confined to individual minds or brains, or that it must be explained in such a way. Such claims provoke questions such as: What exactly is EC? What does it mean to say that cognition extends beyond the mind/brain system as usually conceived? What, if anything, is the mark of the cognitive? How far from the mind/brain system does EC extend? What do you think? What is free will? Is free will compatible with determinism? Do humans have free will? There are a few things that are necessary for a successful paper of this kind: a clearly articulated thesis—it must be abundantly clear what your argument is; transparent and logical organization of the paper as a whole and of individual paragraphs—forecast the structure of the whole paper in your introduction and limit each paragraph to addressing a single idea; a clear, concise, and accurate account of the ideas, arguments, and authors that you’re engaging; and a compelling defense of your thesis that considers competing claims and possible objections or counter-arguments—remember, it’s not enough simply to state your position; you need to convince your reader to adopt it.
