Forging Feminist Identity; Collective Identity and the Evaluation of Oppositional Frame Resonance
Forging Feminist Identity; Collective Identity and the Evaluation of Oppositional Frame Resonance
Order Description
research can be either a case study or a comparative study. For instance, you can choose to focus on one movement or even on one social-movement organization, or
instead to compare across movements. The paper should be analytical, decide early on what it is that interests you (e.g. leadership, organizational structure,
participation, tactics, etc.), so that you have time to research your topic.
Aforementioned "specific directions"
Structure and elements of a research paper
Introduction (3-4 pages, once done with all elements)…
—should set the context, open with statistics, examples, event, anything you find interesting…
—explanation of research question (pose question), outline argument (summary of key aspects of ways you are answering question)….theories, cases, process
—Logic of case reflection … why is this case worth examining under the theory you are using? why is this the most important case to answer this question? Are you
expanding on theory? Using new case that will help you build on theory? Make a case as to why it is interesting, important, relevant…case for significance
—Methods…could be materials the movements themselves produce..talk about your sources, how you’re obtaining them.. explain method of analysis you will be using in the
paper
3. Literature Review (3-5 pages) …analyzing existing literature to see where your thesis falls
—build literature review..what have other authors said about your topic? Arguing that A,B, and C, lead to this…you can contrast in analysis of your own argument of
what the existing literature says
-not summary, create a conversation.heavily connected to research question and process you’re trying to unpack
example: framing analysis…what interests you the most about this particular group? why/how they mobilize? recruitment strategies? social media aspects? framing?
specific tactics or strategies…what is the process that you’re interested in. develop question even further
framing: two subsections, one conceptual that develops tool and models and what aspects of tools and models you’ll be using
a second one that focuses on ideology (but be more specific)
theory or model—needs to include section that can be subdivided, framing and organizational structure in relation to success
-how organizational structure has impacts that are external to the organizations…vertical versus horizontal structures
what do theorists think? between 5-10 theorists
—be very strategic as to how you work on literature review
—try to come across literature reviews of your topic “assessment of”
—start tables of variables that authors stress, this helps to compare … set up not author by author but variable by variable
—address literature on radicalization and radicalization in environmental movements (example)
background information (2 pages)…what they need to know to understand your argument important information in the background of the movement -background information
should come directly before analysis
3. Analysis (3-5 pages)
—does my case confirm expectations? Does it contradict?
4. Conclusions
—summarize take-aways from analysis, suggest further research
—example: what part of the labor remains to be done?
My Specifics:
Title: Forging Feminist Identity; Collective Identity and the Evaluation of Oppositional Frame Resonance
Two organizations I want to focus on: NARAL Pro-Choice America and National Right to Life Committee
-I want the paper to focus on how movement actors assess the resonant appeal of oppositional frames
—I want it to analyze how activists in the American pro-choice movement (NARAL) have responded to the faction of pro-life movement (National Right to Life Committee)
and how this affected the collective identity as the movement as a whole
—The paper needs to address what specific aspect of collective identity has impacted movement success for these organizations
—Paper should touch on the formation of collective identity through oppositional frameworks
