Formal Analysis Paper

This 500-700 word short paper (2–3 pages, double spaced) will be a close formal analysis of 2 single scenes of your choice. The 2 scenes can be from one single film OR from two films that we have watched in class (Rashomon, A Page of Madness, Sisters of the Gion, Late Spring, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, or Hana-bi). Examine film techniques used in them and compare these techniques, making use of the relevant film terms learned so far. For example, you can identify and compare the position and movement of the camera, the mise-en-scène, the use of narration and music, the application of cultural references, etc. Discuss similarities/differences in terms of techniques you notice in the 2 scenes and how these techniques help shape the particular messages in the film(s).
