Possible theories or themes to tie into Essay #1: Feminism and/or ideas of the patriarchy Psychoanalysis Notions of sexual confusion (sex and death) Sigmund Freud’s “id,” “superego,” “ego,” or repression Existentialism Questions of Identity (“Who am I?”) and sense of self The theory of the Evil “I” Otherness Deconstruction Theory Dichotomous relationships Students should stick with the theories and themes of the course. Do not add themes (i.e. Feminism and Psychoanalysis) together. This would be too much to develop in a short essay. If students choose to do a comparison, they MUST devote at least two paragraphs (one page at the end for analysis to discuss: What is significant about the comparison? What are the authors trying to tell the readers by addressing these themes? (i.e. take the argument further). Don’t forget to explain the significance of these comparisons and give some deep analysis as to what hidden message or meaning the author is trying to convey to the reader.
