  Gangs have been part of the American cultural fabric since the early 19th century. While there is no single definition for what constitutes a “gang”, they are generally defined as an organized group of individuals who share a common purpose to engage in criminal activity or territorial control.

Gangs come in many different types, such as street gangs, outlaw motorcycle clubs, prison gangs and ethnic-based gangs. Historically, they have been associated with violence and illegal drug use. The primary purpose of gangs is to create a sense of belonging and power amongst its members; by joining such an organization individuals can gain strength in numbers that provide protection from outside threats and give them access to resources not available through other sources. This desire for a sense of belonging has been observed throughout human history – it is instinctive for humans to form organizations based on shared values, lifestyles or beliefs that can be beneficial for survival. It is also often perceived as “cool” or attractive by some members who may view it as a way to gain friends or popularity within their community. In The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, gang culture plays an integral role in the story: Starr Carter’s father was once part of King Lords gang which he left after his brother (Big Mav) was killed in a drive-by shooting; Starr's friend Khalil joins Garden Heights' local gang (the King Lords), while Maverick starts his own rival gang called 'Mad Row'. In both real life and fiction, gangs can have a negative effect on communities - they can encourage violence among their members and create tension between rival groups. All things considered forming social organizations whether legal legal illegal based upon shared values experiences something deeply embedded human nature which testify our willingness maintain order unity even potentially danger situation like streets dangerous urban neighborhoods where disorganization chaos could otherwise reign supreme . Consequently understanding reasons behind formation allows authorities apply better policies regulations discourage formation reduce amount crime criminality stemming thereof whilst simultaneously seeking alternative solutions improve quality life citizens especially impoverished areas risk becoming breeding grounds criminal activity .
