When the Estates General met to assemble at Versailles on May 5 1789 it was believed that France was on a threshold of a golden age of enlightenment. Five years later the country was drenched in blood with its king and queen having been executed in public as enemies of the nation. Write an essay ( based on what learned in class) on why the revolution took the course that it did and whether there any lessons we in the 21st century can learn from this experience.
