According to “Gender and Socialization,” parents socialize their sons and daughters differently . . . . Even when
parents set gender equality as a goal, there may be underlying indications of inequality” (26). Discuss how the
concepts of family as an agent of socialization relate to Sandra Cisneros’ family expectations of her in “Only
Daughter.” What were your family’s expectations of you as you grew up, and how did those expectations affect
your life choices? How did your gender affect these expectations? How does your experience compare and/or
contrast to Cisneros’s?
In your essay, you must convey a clear understanding of the texts, the excerpt from “Gender and Socialization”
and “Only Daughter,” either by integrating them into your argument or by summarizing them. If you summarize,
make sure that your summary clearly relates to the focus of your analysis (your thesis). If you use direct quotes
or paraphrase (take an idea from the text and put in your own words), they must be placed within quotation
marks and you must parenthetically document your source (author’s last name page number).
Make sure that you plan and outline your response before you begin to write so that your paragraphs are
unified and developed. Save enough time for editing and proofreading. Correct grammar and sentence
structure are important.
