Throughout this course, we will explore how musicians negotiate their gender expression within rigid societal
expectations. In this essay, you will utilize FreeMuse’s reports to research a musician who has experienced
persecution due to their gender expression. This analysis should consider how their persecution is influenced not
just by community expectations but internalized understandings of gender due to colonialism, ableism, antiBlackness, homophobia, etc. Concluding, you will identify community-led efforts, if any, that are organizing to
support individuals vulnerable to this gendered violence and prevent future instances of persecution.
