Genetic testing is something that I deal with on a daily basis in the NICU. This does raise several questions for providers as well as parents. If I had a parent come to me with this genetic testing, I would proceed with further testing to ensure that the first results were accurate and to see if we could get more specific answers. I would also advise testing the other twin as well, just to be safe. There are so many genetic tests out there today, I would want to know which genetic test was performed, I would also want to see the actual report to determine what the results mean from the testers directly. There is also no treatment for breast cancer at such an early age, the preventative care should begin at an earlier age than recommended. There are great genetics departments at many Children’s Hospitals and they should be involved in any decision making when it comes to making decisions based on genetic testing.
