Order Description
Team 2
Jung argued that myths recur across cultures and times because they are narrative and iconic manifestations of psychological archetypes which are themselves universal
across times and cultures. Choosing a mythic pattern other than the flood story, give a narrative paradigm (=story pattern) from at least two sources from our assigned
readings that you think might qualify as instantiations of such an archetype. What do the stories have in common? How are they different? Account for both the
similarities and the differences. Some things to consider:
• Try to think about your narrative paradigm broadly. In other words, the flood pattern is pretty specific; thinking more broadly, how might certain hero stories show
similarities, even if the heroes themselves are different from one another? Is there something common to mortals and their relationships with the gods? Can you
identify any consistent lessons or patterns in this human-divine relationship? What about more abstract issues, such as oracles, or infant exposure?
Don’t forget to craft a careful and specific thesis statement around which you build your argument. This essay is not a place simply to list similarities and
differences between books. Examine the issue and provide analysis to prove your central argument
General Information
Please read this whole page carefully. If you have any questions after reading the whole page, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Before we get to the topics, it’s vital that you understand that this is an analytic paper, NOT a research paper or book report. I actually discourage you from using
outside sources/library sources. Further, you may not use any online resources except for the online readings; this includes Wikipedia (an unreliable website anyway),
online dictionaries, online mythology websites, etc. DO NOT USE THE INTERNET! (Your paper will be penalized 5% for using online sources.) Try to base your ideas on the
readings, lectures, and other course materials. The topics are deliberately open so that you can explore your own ideas within the topic to fit your interests. The
topics also have some accompanying questions: you should not simply respond to all of the questions posed in the topic; they are there simply to help get your ideas
turning.
This paper is worth a significant proportion of your final grade, and things like having a strong thesis statement, using direct quotes to support your argument, clean
grammar, etc., are important parts of grading. It’s always sad for me when I have to dock points from a paper because a student keeps spelling a title or writer’s name
wrong, or because the student has no central thesis. Treat this paper seriously. I strongly encourage you to visit the Undergraduate Writing Center in Boucke (Links to
an external site.).
Topics
Each team has been assigned to a different topic. See the Team-Topic Assignments pagePreview the documentView in a new window below. The primary reason for this policy
is facilitation of discussion within your team’s discussion forum. You can easily discuss the topic or share ideas. I encourage you to chat about the topic with your
teammates, but you are, of course, expected to write your own paper.
Note: If you really don’t want to write on your assigned topic or if you see another topic that inspires you more than your assigned topic, we can discuss your
changing. I prefer that you respond to the topic assigned to your team, but I’m willing to work with you. I will not approve any topics or theses that don’t at least
fit within one of the posted topics—don’t go rogue without talking to me first.
