    In today’s society, marginalization of certain groups is an unfortunate reality. That is, some members of our society do not enjoy the same rights or access to resources as others due to their race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. One such group that has been systematically and historically marginalized are LGBTQ individuals.  

This can be seen in everything from housing discrimination and disparities in healthcare access to hate crimes and systemic oppression by law enforcement agencies. When it comes to LGBTQ individuals facing marginalization, a large part of this stems from heteronormativity – the notion that heterosexuality is the norm – which creates a culture where anything outside of those boundaries must be subject to punishment or ridicule (Harlow et al., 2020). In addition, because many religious institutions generally oppose same-sex relationships on moral grounds (Pruden & Johnson 2005), this further perpetuates negative views about non-heterosexual individuals. Unfortunately, these biases often manifest themselves in real life situations such as employment opportunities; transgender people and lesbian women have significantly lower rates of full-time employment than their straight counterparts (Meyer 2012). This lack of economic opportunity leads to disproportionate levels of poverty among queer communities which then restrict them even further when accessing educational and healthcare services. It must also be noted that despite progressive movements in recent years towards acceptance for LGBTQ individuals, violence against this group still occurs at alarming rates. According to a 2017 report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) 1 out every 5 homicide victims identified as LGBT - with trans women making up 40% - compared with 1 out every 11 non-LGBTQ homicide victims (Ficocelli et al., 2018). Furthermore, when considering other forms of discrimination like bullying or harassment within school settings, there appears to be even more significant disparities; 75% percent of students who identify as transgender reported feeling unsafe at school due to their gender identity/expression compared with only 3% for cisgender students (GLSEN 2019). Ultimately what we may be losing as a society without creating safe spaces for LGBTQ people are basic human rights afforded to all citizens regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity: fair housing options; improved educational outcomes; job security; protection from hate crimes and other forms violence based on identity markers like race/ethnicity etc.; secure healthcare access; and greater financial success across multiple areas including income inequality gaps between straight versus queer persons (Rogers et al., 2017) . Failing address these issues could result in increased insecurity within already vulnerable populations which will lead us down an untenable path if left unchecked over time.
