Healthcare Policy and Community Health Advocacy Order Description Healthcare Policy and Community Health Advocacy Learning Activity: *This will count for 2 assignment grades-Chapter 11 & Chapter 13* The purpose of this assignment is to assure that students know how to find their state legislators and research the positions they take on healthcare related issues, and to encourage students to think about how they might become involved in the political process. 1. Complete the assigned reading on policy making and community health advocacy. 2. Go to: http://www.senate.ga.gov/senators/en-US/FindyourLegislator.aspx and locate one of your state level legislators. Who is the legislator you’ve identified? 3. Research your legislator’s positions on health issues. Identify one health related piece of legislation sponsored by your state representative or senator, and briefly explain (a paragraph) why you think this legislation is important to you as a nurse and/or to the patients you serve. (You’re not being graded on the position you take!) 5. Write a brief paragraph explaining the following: How has this exercise related to what you read in the textbook about policy making and community health advocacy? What could you do to make your views about this policy known to your legislator?
