Order Description
write two essays this year (each worth 15%) – one per term. Each essay
will be a 1500-word (max) summary of a key debate in Economic History. You should
use the week’s readings as starting points, but should go far, far beyond them – they are
only hints as to where to start. Academic literature is like a long-running conversation
that takes decades in the form of articles and books. The aim of the essay you write is to
summarise the broad strokes of the conversation so far – what’s called a literature
review. Part of what this assesses is your ability to research – you will need to find the
things to summarise, and be able to work out which of them are appropriate. But it
should not just be descriptive; it should be analytical, even critically evaluative (for the
highest marks). You should be assessing the literature, pointing out differences and
similarities, and giving a verdict on it supported by evidence.
