Introduction The purpose of this talk is to explore how primary care providers can assist in meeting the needs of LGBTQ adolescents. This topic has become increasingly important as more LGBTQ youth seek healthcare and education on relevant topics, but face a lack of access to gender affirming healthcare due to stigma and biases within the medical system.
Stephanie Evans, PhD, RN provided an overview of the current literature regarding issues faced by LGBTQ adolescents in primary care settings and best practices for providing culturally sensitive care. She also discussed potential solutions that could address some of these issues.
Background and Significance
LGBTQ adolescents experience disparities in health outcomes compared to their heterosexual counterparts; they have higher rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, HIV infection/transmission risk behaviors or experiences with homelessness or foster care placement than their heterosexual peers (Evans 2019). Additionally, many healthcare providers may be unaware about LGBT-competent care or lack knowledge on how to provide appropriate services and support for these patients; consequently this gap can put them at greater risk for negative health outcomes (Evans 2019). Dr Evans discussed several key areas where primary care providers must improve if they are going to meet the needs of LGBTQ adolescents including: creating an inclusive environment by being aware of language use; understanding medical history; developing relationships with outside resources like support groups or mental health professionals; providing education on safe sex practices; and increasing awareness about hormone replacement therapy options available if needed.
Methodology
Stephanie Evans conducted a critical review of existing literature related to primary care interventions tailored towards meeting the healthcare needs of LGBTQ youth using both qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups as well as quantitative methods such as surveys and questionnaires. The study found that there were significant gaps in knowledge among both primary care providers and patients when it came to addressing physical health concerns that affect LGBT individuals such as sexually transmitted infections prevention counseling or hormone replacement therapy options available if needed(Evans 2019). In order to close these gaps she proposed several solutions which included: improving provider competency through continuing education programs on LGBT-competent healthcare delivery models; developing patient-centered approaches tailored specifically towards addressing physical health concerns unique among LGBT individuals such a trans specific questions during sexual history taking sessions; increasing visibility by participating in community events promoting acceptance like pride parades etc.; implementing cultural humility principles into practice routines etc.(Evans 2019). .
Discussion
Dr Evans identified several ways that primary care providers can help meet the healthcare needs experienced by LGBT youths however there were two major limitations mentioned throughout her presentation which could impact its effectiveness – stigma surrounding sexuality/gender identity within our society & limited access points for these youths seeking culturally competent healthcare services due to rural locations & financial barriers etc.(Evans 2019). Despite these challenges she believed that if we addressed each one individually then we would begin making progress towards reducing disparities when it comes down delivering quality patient centered services based upon individual’s identity rather than just “population” level assumptions made about certain demographics(Evans 2019).
Clarity Succinctness Flow Of Ideas (20 Points) Dr Evan's research was easy to follow given her clear explanations throughout her presentation. Her talk was well organized with slides outlining key aspects from her findings while speaking directly from those slides so viewers had enough time digest what she was saying before moving onto next point--making sure audience stayed engaged until end without losing interest midway. By also providing practical examples along way helped viewers understand real world implications based off her research findings/experiences & how those findings could potentially used combat disparities faced currently amongst LGBtq youth population today who don't receive same kind access quality preventative/primarycare treatment others do due factors mentioned above earlier section."
