In his book, “How to Make it in College: Now that You’re Here,” Brian O’Keeney offers comprehensive advice for college students looking to manage their time and responsibilities more effectively. In particular, he suggests creating a schedule or plan of action for each day and week; breaking up tasks into smaller chunks; finding ways to simplify tasks with technology or other resources;
delegating jobs if possible; setting goals and deadlines; tracking progress with a checklist or calendar; minimizing distractions from friends and social media; focusing on one task at a time without multitasking; taking breaks to refresh the mind and body when needed throughout the day.
I am most likely to use the suggestion of creating a daily schedule or plan of action. Having an organized look at my upcoming tasks helps me stay motivated by providing direction for what I have left to accomplish each day. Along with this strategy, I will also be sure to set small goals throughout my workdays – such as completing one chapter of reading per hour – so that I can track my progress towards larger goals more easily.
The suggestion that I am least likely to use is delegating jobs if possible because I prefer working independently whenever possible. Even though collaboration is important during group projects, it is not always necessary nor helpful when attempting individual tasks like studying alone or writing an essay by myself. Additionally, I feel comfortable managing all aspects of completing assignments on my own so there would be no need for me delegate any portion of the job even if help was available from another person.
Overall, O’Keeney provides practical advice for college students who wish to manage their time better in order succeed academically while still being mindful about taking care of themselves emotionally and physically throughout the process (O'Keeney 2020). Although some suggestions may be easier than others depending upon each student's situation, following these strategies has helped many people achieve balance both inside and outside of school (O'Keeney 2020). The key is finding out which tips are best suited for you personally in order maximize your productivity while preserving your mental health in the long run (O'Keeney 2021).
