Nutrition is a large component of maternal and fetal health, and some nutrition choices can have impacts that last a lifespan. With your studies in healthcare, patients, friends, and family members are likely to ask for your informed opinion regarding maternal nutrition choices.

fetus access to vital nutrients they need for proper growth and development. For example, an adequate intake of proteins, vitamins, minerals and other macronutrients are all key components of optimal prenatal nutrition (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Obstetrics Practice & American Society for Clinical Nutrition [ACOG], 2019). Additionally, pregnant women should supplement their diets with extra folic acid as it helps protect against congenital neural tube defects such as spina bifida (Harte et al., 2017).
On the other hand, extreme dietary behaviors such as eating disorders or restricting certain food groups can be detrimental to both maternal and fetal health. Eating disorders during pregnancy have been linked with lower birth weights due to inadequate nutrient supply caused by decreased caloric intake (Bruno et al., 2017; Karpacz et al., 2017). Moreover, studies show that individuals who suffer from eating disorders during gestation are at higher risk for developing postpartum depression which can further impair their ability to care for themselves or their baby (Guillén-Riquelme et al., 2020; O’Connor et al., 2011). In addition to this physical toll on mother’s health throughout gestation, research suggests that restrictive eating behaviors may leave long lasting epigenetic marks on the fetus which could potentially cause physiological problems later in life such as metabolic syndrome or cardiovascular disease (Knox et al., 2016; Reaven & Lustig 2009).
In conclusion, good nutrition before conception through delivery plays an integral role in maintaining proper maternal and fetal health outcomes. Therefore it is important not only that pregnant women consume a balanced diet but also avoid extreme dietary restrictions or behaviours during pregnancy.
