Martha E. Rogers' Science of Unitary Human Beings (SUHB), developed in 1970, is a highly abstract and philosophical grand nursing theory. It views the human being as an irreducible, indivisible, pandimensional energy field that is integral with the equally irreducible, indivisible, pandimensional environmental energy field. This means humans are not simply the sum of their parts, but rather whole beings that cannot be separated from their environment. They are constantly exchanging energy with their environment, creating a dynamic, continuous process of human and environmental change.
Rogers' theory emphasizes that nursing is a science and an art focused on this unitary human being and their environment. The purpose of nursing, according to Rogers, is to promote health and well-being for all persons, which involves strengthening the coherence and integrity of the human and environmental fields, and directing patterning of the human-environment interaction for the maximum health potential.
