It should be obvious now that “13th Warrior,” based on the novel by Michael Crichton, Eaters of the Dead, is a mash-up of Beowulf and Ibn Fadlan’s account of his travels. To be sure, the premise of the story is absurd: the Neanderthal species of the Homo genus went extinct tens of thousands of years earlier than the period in which Beowulf was transcribed. Explain three insights into the poem and the culture that produced it that you gained from reading Ibn Fadlan’s account and watching the film.
