The intervention/treatment plan was conducted in a private counselling office. The environment was designed to ensure client safety and confidentiality, with comfortable chairs for the client and counsellor, a desk for notes and paperwork, tissues, and other resources as needed. Additionally there were visual reminders of providing unconditional positive regard such as art on the walls depicting nature scenes.
I used literature to guide my practice by creating an individualized treatment plan tailored to meet the needs of the client based on their presenting issues, the theoretical framework I use when counselling (humanistic-existential), and evidence-based practices. To create this plan I looked at literature regarding depression, anxiety, trauma work (such as EMDR) grief work/loss/bereavement etc., all depending on what issues the client presented with. These articles included research studies about how different interventions worked with clients similar to mine; all of which provided valuable information that informed my decision making around what should be included in their treatment plan.
The experience of working with this particular client was extremely rewarding due to their willingness to engage in therapy despite any reservations they had initially. They opened up from the first session onwards about how they felt; whether it be feelings of guilt or failure over certain aspects of their lives or feeling anxious about attending therapy sessions because it brought back memories of past traumatic events that occurred during childhood that had never been talked about before until now. We discussed techniques such as grounding exercises or mindfulness strategies which helped them cope when these memories came up again while we were talking together; but also addressed why those memories occurred in order to try and process them safely within our sessions together so they didn’t have a long lasting effect on their current life situation.
Overall one emerging theme throughout this experience was self worth - both learning new ways in which they can start valuing themselves no matter what happened in past experiences and accepting that mistakes are part of being human instead letting it overwhelm them negatively - but also understanding where true self worth comes from rather than relying upon external sources such as approval from others or success at whatever endeavor you attempt at life; leading into increased resilience levels so even if things don't always go your way you're still able to pick yourself back up whilst understanding your own value regardless
