Iran's nuclear problem What global leaders—including three US presidents, four prime ministers of Israel and numerous leaders across Europe—swore would never occur is actually taking place. What was meant never to be is very close to becoming a reality (Shavit, 2013). Iran’s nuclear bomb has almost been realized.  But should the blame lie on Obama or Bush? Though situations are always changing and decisions made every step of the way can greatly shape the outcome, this particular problem was set into motion long before Obama took over office, so logically Bush is the president at fault. Some experts say that if Bush had opted to show American leadership and demonstrate American strength by initiating a diplomatic initiative against Iran instead of pursuing a military campaign against Iraq a decade ago, the international standing of the  would be greater than it is now. The decision of the Bush administration to invade Iraq instead of Iran was a dangerous one (Shavit, 2013). In addition, the long-term effects are only now becoming apparent; and among these effects is a devastating failure by America in the war to deter a nuclear Iran as evidenced by Washington’s eagerness to sign a weak and deeply flawed agreement. Bush’s responsibility for the disaster currently being revealed is twofold. First and foremost, he was unable to target Iran ten years ago, and this established a climate today which makes it very hard to target this same country. His administration did not lean on political pressure or put economic sanctions on Iran at the opportune time when this nation was weak (Shavit, 2013). Moreover, Bush weakened the United States by depleting its economic strength and military power in an insignificant and meaningless war. By the time US resolve was needed to tackle genuine global challenges, there was no determination.  That determination had been almost completely used up on the wrong mission. The better way to deal with the threat posed by Iran would have been to create a broad coalition made up of such entities as the EU, Russia, US, Israel and Sunni Arab nations (Shavit, 2013). This combined effort would have placed the leaders of Iran under a great deal of pressure and compelled them to abandon their nuclear project. In the end, the world would most likely not be experiencing the same tension and potential crises it is facing today if only such a coalition had been created. The Republican Party could have ensured that this international coalition and the joint efforts to pressure Iran became a reality in 2003, 2005 or 2007; however, Republican leaders never used the opportunity they had. Worse still, the serious challenges the United States faced in both Afghanistan and Iraq wore the country out. Bush left to Obama a country that had lost most of the strong resolve it once had (Shavit, 2013). When faced with a real danger to world peace, the will of the United States as a whole was already spent. It has disappeared on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama has also made his own fair share of mistakes, though. After assuming office, he spent more time on an insignificant policy of engagement and ineffective sanctions rather than directly dealing with the issues at hand. Obama disregarded the British, Saudis, Israelis, French and Egyptians who cautioned him that he was acting naïve and ignored Iranian masses looking for freedom in 2009; so when Obama finally adopted assertive diplomacy and strong sanctions, it was already too late. Still, Obama was operating within the bounds of the strategic disaster passed on to him by Bush (Shavit, 2013). Following the war in Iraq, the United States remains a traumatized country with a limited focus on and desire for challenges in the Middle East. Because of these endless, meaningless conflicts, the nation has both become weary and has lost the wisdom and vigor required to handle one of the world’s most turbulent regions.
