I have had the privilege of being a part of numerous conversations and experiences related to sexual orientation, romantic attraction, sexuality, and gender expression. I believe that these conversations can be incredibly beneficial for both individuals who are exploring their identity as well as those who are working on understanding and supporting others.
One example is my time working on the staff team at a summer camp in college. Prior to camp starting, we had extensive training about creating an inclusive environment for all our campers, including those who were questioning or already identified with LGBTQ+ identities. I felt empowered by the fact that my supervisors trusted us with this information and provided us resources to prepare us in case any issues arose during camp. During our week-long experience together with the campers, there were many opportunities to talk openly about these issues through roleplaying activities and facilitated discussions. In addition to being able to support our campers in these moments, it was also helpful for me personally as I navigated questions of my own sexual orientation at the same time. It allowed me the opportunity to normalize feelings of confusion around identity while providing practical tools for how people can best respond when faced with negative feedback or judgement from others regarding their decisions around sexuality or gender expression.
Another experience I’ve been fortunate enough to take part in has been teaching workshops about intersecting identities among undergraduate students at a university setting . My goal here has been twofold: (1) create space so students feel comfortable discussing topics relevant to sexual orientation/gender expression; (2) provide education on terminology used within LGBT communities such as gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/queer etc., discuss different social movements related to LGBT rights throughout history, explore concepts like heteronormativity & cisnormativity , highlight differences between biological sex & gender identity , explain what “coming out” means , brainstorm strategies for responding positively when you hear someone else come out , etc.. These workshops not only serve as educational sessions but also allow participants—many of whom may have never talked openly before—to engage with one another meaningfully on difficult yet important topics related LGBTQ+ experiences .
Overall , engaging in conversations related to sexual orientation , romantic attraction , sexuality & gender expression has helped shape how I understand myself & relate better towards others . These conversations provide insight into unique perspectives outside my own worldview which ultimately allows more room for growth & connection no matter where someone falls along diverse spectrums of identification . Additionally having access resources like books / films depicting stories from marginalized communities help broaden understanding even further which opens conversation paths not always visible when relying solely off personal lived experience .
