J S Mill's invest recommendation.
J S Mill's invest recommendation.
General Instructions:
Paper Topic:
You have $10,000 to invest. You want to purchase publicly-traded securities which are marketable enough so that you can sell them easily in case you need the money for some other opportunity, e.g. as the down payment on a house. You don’t know a lot about investing but you either want to buy common stock or bonds of XYZ Company. You know that owning bonds is lending money to a company and that the company is legally obligated to pay you interest periodically (usually twice a year) and to return your investment principal at maturity (the legal “end of the life”) of the bond. You know that owning common stock means you are an “owner” of the company and that the company may pay, but is not obligated to pay, dividends (a distribution of the company’s profits). The company also has no obligation to return your initial investment. You understand that stock ownership is generally riskier but presents the opportunity for larger profits (and potentially larger losses) and that bond ownership is generally less risky which implies smaller profits but that there is still some risk.
Your task in this paper is to choose one author from the list provided below and assume that the chosen author is an investment advisor. You are visiting the investment advisor and they must make a recommendation to you as to which type of security you should buy and why, or that neither investment is wise and that you should just hold onto the money. Their recommendation, and explanation, should be consistent with your chosen author’s world views. They should not reflect your personal views. You should not mimic the ideas of other individuals whose views are expressed in articles or books you read. The paper should not be written using language or grammar which might reflect the time period in which the author lived. You should imagine that the author is alive today and would speak or write in contemporary English. The paper should be written in a first person narrative style (i.e., the author is speaking). You may use a few brief quotes from the author but the paper should be primarily original thought. You should not simply restate what the chosen author has already written. Quotes or paraphrases must be clearly distinguished and cited.
