Your paper involves research. You will choose a theme in or question about Jane Eyre and research how literary critics analyze that aspect of the novel. You must find at least three scholarly articles that address your topic and write a paper that incorporates your research into your own interpretation. You might find contradictory theories or interpretations in the articles, i.e. they may contradict each other, or even your own view. If so, that’s fine!
For your topic, you may use any ideas or questions that have come up in our discussions in class or online, for example the following: 1. Was Charlotte Bronte a feminist, based on your reading of Jane Eyre? 2. What is Bronte’s view of romance and romantic love? 3. What is the significance of Jane’s childhood in Jane Eyre? 4. What was the influence of Gothic literature on Jane Eyre?
