Number your responses according to the prompt numbering and be sure to respond to every “part” of the prompt. Skip a space between the different
“parts” of the prompt. This part is Chapters 5-8 of Grendel. The questions are 1. What is the controlling/central image of the chapter? How does this image convey meaning? (Hint: it is most likely associated with one of the
12 Zodiac symbols. A key, titled “Grendel Chapter Meanings,” can be found on the Learning Portal.) 2. What major characters are introduced in the chapter? What virtues and/or vices and thematic issues do they represent? How does Grendel react to or deal with them? 3. What is the primary conflict in the chapter? How does the outcome of that conflict convey meaning? 4. What is the main theme or central idea of the chapter?
How does the chapter celebrate or demonize a cultural value, virtue, or way of thinking? Evaluate the presentation of this theme by Gardner. 5. Comment on Gardner’s style, focusing on diction, use of literary elements, and contextual/comparative (to Beowulf) meanings. As this activity takes the place of daily lectures, presentations, and class discussion, for the most part, be sure to respond as completely as possible to the prompts.
