Read John R. Clarke’s article and share three things that you learned from it about the ways of life of the ancient Romans. Be sure to be specific and provide some detail. Explain how these discoveries complement, complicate, or enrich your image of daily life in Ancient Rome and how they might change or nuance the way in which you now look at ancient Roman objects.
Second, study carefully the five object essays in Part Eight of our book, then go over to the Art Institute and look at objects made before 1800. Identify one object that is kindred in spirit with one of the five objects described in the book. Feel free to interpret the phrase “kindred in spirit” broadly but be sure to identify a strong link and fully explain it.
