10 double-spaced pages. The paper will focus on a comparison or contrast of Greek
(Athenian Phalanx) and Roman (Leg’on) military structures. Focuses can be on who
was allowed to serve in either army and why, how were ranks established and what
were their importance, how mits worked together or independently in the two armies,
finally which style of fighting better and why- The paper MUST utilize at least three
primary source citations and at least three citations from research material. The
student will present a) the historicanoliticaVsocial context of each thing
compared/contrasted b) the characteristics of each thing compared/contrasted c) the
historical importance and the effect on later history of the ancient and modem worlds
of each thing compared/contrasted, and most importantly d) the reasons why this is a
fruitful comparison and contrast, detailing why this comparison/contrast is instructive
for an ancient historian (ie what does this comparison/contrast reveal about the
trajectory of ancient history?)-
