It was my first day back at school after summer break. I had just settled into my usual spot in the classroom when a new student walked through the door. He looked small and shy, with curly hair and tanned skin. It soon became apparent that he did not understand English. As if sensing my confusion, his teacher quickly explained that this young boy had recently transferred to our class from Mexico City, only speaking Spanish.
At first I was taken aback by this new addition to our class; how am I supposed to interact with him if we can't speak the same language? But then it dawned on me: instead of being a problem, this could be an opportunity for both of us to learn something new! With enthusiasm and some basic Spanish vocabulary already stored in my brain – slowly but surely gathered during family trips over the years - I decided it was time for me to step up as a friend and peer mentor. To start off, I began introducing myself in Spanish and encouraged him to do so as well. Although his accent made it clear he was not natively fluent in the language, he still managed to piece together simple sentences as he spoke about himself. We exchanged names (mine being Emma) and soon enough we were having a conversation like any other two students might have in their second language learning process - sharing stories, jokes even! Although very basic ones due to limited vocabulary on both ends; nevertheless it felt good knowing that there’s someone willing enough inside of him still curious about making friends despite all odds stacked against him…and vice versa! As days passed by – or rather weeks since you know how slow-paced college classes are – we continued communicating primarily through body language whenever words failed us; which admittedly happened quite often at first but improved gradually every single day until one day we were having full-on conversations without ever skipping a beat! After seeing how far along our friendship had come since his arrival in such short amount of time filled me with joy for succeeding where many would have given up - turning an intercultural barrier into an enriching experience shared between two people completely different yet connected by mutual understanding centred around human values such as respect and openness towards others no matter their background or origin story narrative alike…as cliché as that sounds haha!. Fast forward six months later: here we are happily talking away like old chums catching up on life each morning before taking off into other class sessions now more confident than ever speaking either English or Spanish interchangeably regardless what situation requires while finding common ground wherever possible along way too despite cultural differences previously standing between us initially once upon time ago before deciding take chance metamorphosis journey together xD!.
