• Parents/caregivers should be aware of the infant’s attempts to communicate and respond by talking back and smiling in response (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 2018).
Age 3-6 Months:
• Babies are likely to start making vocal noises that sound like words such as “mama” or “dada”.
• They will also pay attention when they hear other people speaking around them.
• Parents/caregivers should watch for signs of language development such as turning head toward voices or attempting to imitate speech sounds (American Speech-Hearing Association, 2020).
Age 6-9 Months:
• At this age, babies are likely to understand simple commands such as “no” or “come here”.
• They can use gestures like pointing at objects or waving goodbye.
• Parents/caregivers should look out for delays in motor skills that could affect the baby's ability develop language skills (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2021) .
Age 9-12 Months: • Babies may have a vocabulary of about 5 words by now and might be learning new ones every day. •They can understand more complex instructions than before and may even recognize their own name when called upon. •Parents/Caregivers should stay alert for any potential problems with language development that could include not speaking yet at 12 months old or only using single words (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2017).
If parents/caregivers notice their child is having difficulty developing language skills on par with what is normally expected at each stage listed above then it may benefit them to seek professional help from a pediatrician or speech therapist who can provide specialized advice concerning how best to assist the child's development (American Speech Language Hearing Association [ASHA], 2019).
