The hippocampus is a major component of the brain that plays an essential role in learning, memory and addiction. The hippocampus, located within the brain’s temporal lobe, is a critical part of the limbic system which is associated with emotions and behaviors. It helps to regulate emotion, stress levels and motivation, as well as playing an important role in forming new memories.
In terms of learning and memory, the hippocampus has been found to be essential for converting short-term memories into long term memories. This process known as consolidation can take days or weeks to occur. In addition to this it helps people recall past experiences and navigate their way through space by using episodic memories (i.e., remember events). Damage to this area of the brain can lead to deficits in learning and memory such as amnesia or Retrograde Amnesia (the inability to remember recent events).
The hippocampus also plays an important role in addiction due its involvement with reward pathways; it modulates dopamine release so acts like a switch between wanting something pleasurable and obtaining it . When drugs are involved this switch is interrupted leading many people suffering from drug addictions becoming fixated on substance abuse over anything else which can result in physical and psychological dependence upon them.
