INTRODUCTION The purpose of the study presented by Tee Tyler, PhD, MSW in the research symposium talk entitled “Social Identity Transitioning in the Context of Parent-LGBTG Child Relationships” was to explore how LGBTG children transition through social identity stages and how parents can support their child during this process.
Tyler discussed relevant theories associated with LGBTG youth development such as identity formation and emerging adulthood, as well as various strategies that parents can use to positively influence their LGBTG child’s transition. This topic is significant because it provides insight into how parental support may help to facilitate a smoother transition for LGBTG youth into adulthood.
METHOD
Tyler used a narrative review approach which included archival records from published articles, books, journals and other sources that focused on social transitioning for LGBTG youth. Qualitative data analysis techniques were used to assess the literature regarding parental involvement in LGBTG youth transitioning. To measure outcomes related to social transition stages among self-identified adolescent sexual or gender minorities (ASGM), Tyler referenced existing questionnaires such as the Adolescent Social Negotiation Measurement Scale (ASNS) and Multidimensional Model of Minority Stress (MMMS). In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted with parents of ASGM adolescents who had been identified using convenience sampling methods. The findings from these interviews were analyzed using grounded theory approaches within a concurrent mixed method triangulation framework.
DISCUSSION
One implication of Tyler’s research is that parental involvement is important when supporting an LGBTG child during their social transition period. Through her narrative review approach and qualitative interviews with parents, she demonstrated that providing ongoing acceptance and acknowledgment of an individual’s gender identity significantly impacts his/her sense of well-being across numerous domains including physical health, mental health, family relationships and school performance. Additionally, she found that some families encountered difficult challenges in relation to legal documents or religious beliefs due to lack of awareness about LGBTQ issues; however overall most families experienced positive changes over time in terms of improved parent-child communication following successful transitions through various developmental stages. One limitation identified by Tyler was the small sample size which did not allow her team enough power for statistical significance testing; however they still produced meaningful conclusions based on face validity within the results obtained from each source type utilized throughout their research process..
