Every character emits a different personality to teach us a lesson, inform us, and even to bring us pleasure. In
“The Cask of Amontillado,” we are presented with an interaction between the main character, Montresor, and
his friend Fortunato. In this story the main character uses Fortunato ‘s knowledge and love for wine as a way of
luring him to his own death. Montresor’s actions pronounce his personality. Montresor’s actions reflect his
manipulative and vengeful personality that is coated by intelligence and fake friendship
One can easily describe Montresor as a vengeful person. At the hands of Fortunato, Montresor suffered
profusely and in silence. His anger and turmoil began to boil over when he learned that Fortunato took his
honorable name as a joke.” I promised myself that I would make him pay for this — that I would have revenge.
“(Montresor P 68). At the point he made it his goal to have revenge. Montresor could have sat with Fortunato to
discuss his feelings about Fortunato’s actions, instead he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Vengeance was his.
Montresor was an intelligent man, because of this he was able to lure Fortunato indirectly to the vault His
encounter with Fortunato was thought out very well. He never once asked Fortunato to go with him to the vault.
He knew that Fortunato loved wine and that he believed no one knew wine better than him; these were key
elements in Montresor luring Fortunato. He simply explained his situation and Fortunato fell for it and offered
his services.
Finally, Montresor’s action exemplifies him as a cold-hearted man and a prideful man. Montresor was indignant
and because of this, he needed to make sure that Fortunato experienced the same amount of pain if not more.
Montresor took his time to plan out the death of Fortunato. He brought Fortunato down to the vault of his family,
chained him and enclosed him there. Montresor left him there to alive to die a miserable death and even
wished that he rests in peace. These actions are ones of someone who is cold hearted and someone who
doesn’t care about anyone but his self.
All in all, it is easy to see the personality of Montresor by his actions. He is vengeful, manipulative and
intelligent. Not just that, but he is cold-hearted. Unfortunately, his actions show that he isn’t a good man, mostly
because he was a hurting man.
