mass media issues Order Description   • Argument-Persuasion Option: This option focuses on a social change that needs to occur for your topic. The goal for argument (also known as argument-persuasion) is to persuade the reader and then get them to do something for the cause (call to action). Argument at our introductory level involves mainly one common approach in terms of formal layout. To make the decision, consider your purpose. Choose argument if you wish to change others’ minds on this topic and get them to do some kind of action related to it. Choose analysis if you would like to explore a topic deeply to reveal things the audience may not have considered. For analysis, you may be opinionated, and this may (or may not) show in your treatment, but still the paper is written mainly to restructure our view of the topic and reveal truths, not to change people’s minds. For argument, it is assumed you could write a revealing analysis, and of course you’ll use analysis in micro-level ways, but the broad purpose is to change the reader’s mind. General Considerations and Format The paper must use at least two Works Cited entries (research sources) and it must have a total of four in-text citations (we'll discuss these). Any source material, whether paraphrased or quoted, must be documented using the MLA (Modern Language Association) documentation system. We'll work on how to do this in class. Research will be blended with public-access and, in some cases, personal information in these essays. This essay will be graded partly on how it considers its audience in its organization, development, and language use (audience is considered a mixed international adult audience with some college education, like our class). Assume that your most of your audience doesn’t know as much about this topic as you, or at least hasn’t focused on it as much as you. Avoid over-done, obvious topics and content. Use the genre to communicate to people!
