The essay generally lacks a discernible structure – sections come about without introduction, and without any attempt to relate them to the goals of the essay, for
instance - and as a result its dialectic is very unclear and difficult to follow. The essay’s discussion of philosophical topics and particular arguments is likewise
problematic: key concepts and arguments are not explained in any sufficient detail, and the debates in this topic are only relayed in a matter-of-fact fashion without
any independent interpretation or engagement from the author. It’s clear that the author has consulted a fair amount of the relevant literature, and has a grasp on
some of these issues and their complexities, but the essay does not do a good job of relaying that information to the reader in a clear or concise way. The essay ends
with a statement by the author that he/she prefers one position in this debate rather than the other – but the essay nowhere contains a discussion as to why, and for
what reasons he/she believes this. For this reason, the essay does not exhibit an attempt by the author to philosophically engage with the issues in this topic.
