This is to be your crowning achievement for the term, representing about one-third of your semester grade. You should provide a good introduction and well-executed
thesis that stakes a claim on the issue that is the foundation of your chosen topic, source-based discussions that execute that thesis organized into a thoughtful
front-to-back structure, and a summarizing and implication-hinting conclusion—in other words, your basic persuasive academic essay. It also must include a counter
argument, based upon a source, arguing the opposing position of your issue, which you will refute. “Source-based discussions” means that all major discussions in your
body should have source-derived information as their foundation; you may expound at length on any theme, but all discussion should reflect information that your
sources provided you—that’s what research papers do. The well-written essay will include section headings and subheadings, which we will discuss on Nov. 22. Note that
we have in-class group workshops on your papers in progress, dates below; you should provide relevant drafts to your group’s members (those with whom you’ve been
working during the research-paper era).
Submission: The above date reflects our scheduled final exam time slot. That is the drop-dead hour for submitting your paper on time; anything later without
specifically granted permission incurs the late-submission penalties noted in the syllabus. You may turn in your completed project at any point prior once the
assignment is set up in Canvas, which will be around the time formal classes end. Note that the depth of commentary I give to the projects while grading is less than
for other assignments and will be limited to a few general comments about strengths and weaknesses.
