movie process-writing to strengthen your critical thinking and writing abilities. So, for Film Analysis Paper #2 you are to analyze the same film scene you used in your first paper. However, there should be significant differences between these two papers. They will be compared to evaluate your growth in the ability to analyze film. Therefore, use the feedback provided from the Film Analysis Paper #1 AND your new knowledge from the text to augment this second paper. The intent of this assignment is for you to demonstrate that you have read the book and applied the feedback from the first paper to improve the quality of your analysis and writing! As with the first paper, your analysis must also be at least 1,000 words. Add a word count at the end of your paper! Two points will be automatically deducted for every 50 words under the required word count, so make sure to write at least 1,000 words. Please review the Film Analysis Paper Two rubric and be sure to satisfy all the requirements therein. For the “focus” and “evidence” areas of the rubric, I expect to see a thesis that identifies what the filmmakers are trying to communicate with the scene in question, how they attempted to communicate those ideas, and why they were successful (or not). Reinforce this thesis by analyzing the use of all the formal tools of cinema used in the scene -- narrative, cinematography, montage, mise-en-scene, and sound as defined by the text. For organization, format, and style be sure to follow rubric guidelines. Again, refine your writing using the feedback provided in the first paper. A few notes on creating a successful second analysis: 1. Keep your synopsis to a minimum! Focus on the analysis and providing specific solid examples to back up your assertions. 2. Although you are writing about the same film in both of these, DO NOT turn the same paper for Film Analysis Papers #1 and #2! The two papers will be compared to evaluate your growth in the process of analysis. Some people “accidentally” submit Film Analysis Paper #1 when they mean to submit Film Analysis Paper #2. I cannot accept papers after the due date, so do not make this mistake! While I expect some of the same language in both papers, turning in the exact same paper will result in a ZERO for the assignment. 3. Use an academic voice rather than a colloquial voice. That is, avoid overly casual language, including slang and universal statements. Many students approached the first paper as if it were a commercial review or a Buzzfeed/A.V. Club article. Attempt to write the second paper as a scholar in an academic environment. 4. Consult the provided checklist as well. It is a thorough guide and if you meet all the criteria listed, chances are you will score well on this assignment.
