The original review I wrote was on the movie Step Brothers (2008) Step Brothers (2008) Film Review The film Step Brothers (2008) is an American comedy film directed by Adam McKay and written by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. The starring role is fulfilled by Will Ferrell who plays as Brennan Huff, John C. Reilly who disguises as Dale Doback, and Mary Steenburgen who acts as Nancy. In the film, Brennan is represented as a thirty-nine-year-old guy who is constantly in and out of employment and lives with his mother Nancy, while Dale is a year older than Huff but is terminally unemployed. Unlike Brennan, Dale lives with her father, who in this case is Robert. As the film progresses, the director illustrates Nancy and Robert marrying and moving in together, compelling Brennan and Dale to live with each other as step brothers. The two step brothers are represented as being downright lazy, with this habit threatening to divide the family. The step brothers also act immaturely but play a vital role in uniting their parents by coming up with an insane, but a comprehensive plan when their antics tear the family apart. In making this a possibility, the two step brothers combine the abilities they have to come up with a business idea, a rock and roll karaoke company. In this connection, Brennan possesses great singing abilities while Dale displays immense drumming abilities. Apparently, the plan of the two step brothers is hindered by the idea that Dale’s father dreams of sailing around the world, in which case they are compelled to act insanely in order to make their plan successful. This film is overly dramatic and crazy. The director of this film is successful in making it dramatic by illustrating the step brothers driving each other crazy through inflicting agonizing pain upon each other. This is when they are compelled to live together by sharing the same room after Brennan’s father and Dale’s mother make the decision of marrying and moving in together. The language used by the step brothers also makes this film dramatic. Essentially, the director portrays the step brothers using dirty language, which makes the film not only crazy but also dramatic. In addition to the language used by the step brothers, the director makes this film comical by illustrating the actions of the step brothers and their tantrums, as they attempt to drive each other crazy. This is particularly shown in the Christmas scene, where Brennan and Dale engage in sleepwalking and attack Dr. Robert when he attempts to wake them up. The idea that Brennan and Dale are forty or about forty and still living with their parents is another point that illustrates comedy in this film. Brennan is shown living with his mother at the age of thirty nine while Dale is shown living with his father at the age of forty. The only distinguishing factor between Dale and Brennan is that one is terminally unemployed while the other is constantly in employment. The entire film revolves around the step brothers who act in a funny manner by throwing tantrums. The use of swearing language and other physical humor gives this film a humorous and comedic feel and makes it one of the funniest films. Another comic moment established in this film is where the director illustrates a blind man living next to the step brothers possessing a guide dog, which snarls at people and bites them. While the director incorporates a lot of humor in this film, he appears to go overboard since the use of dirty language reduces the credibility of the film as a comedy. Another point of criticism of this film is that it's ending is quite slow as the director reduces humor in an attempt to show what finally happens to the step brothers – whether they succeed in coming up with a rock and roll karaoke company. Although the idea of illustrating a blind man living next door adds humor in this film, it is quite unrelated to main action of the film, given that revolves around the step brothers. From its theme and actions presented in this film by the director, this movie fulfills its purpose as a comedy film. Overall, the title the director gives this film relates well to the actions presented in it since it concerns two step brothers.
