OSHA inspector
Conduct a head-to-toe investigation of that workplace as though you were an OSHA inspector. You will identify potential issues, address any current or past complaints, and formulate a plan on how your workplace can either return to OSHA compliance OR remain within OSHA compliance.
Should you require a bit of direction on how to conduct a thorough investigation playing the part of an OSHA inspector, you can reference the below link, which is an OSHA published Checklist for Compliance.
OSHA Checklist for Compliance (https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/2018-12/fy11_sh-22318-11_Mod_1_OSHAinspectionchecklist.pdf)
If you are unable to find a local business who will allow you access to their operation to examine and conduct this investigation, notify your professor, and additional assistance may be offered to locate a company who will partner with you.
This will include (but not be limited to) the following elements:
• Photograph evidence of workplace hazards that you noticed (if any)
• Explanation of the potential violations you could foresee should that place of business not address the issue
• A rundown of any past or current OSHA violations that place of business may be associated with, and how those issues were addressed.
• Recommendations that you would make for that place of business to remain within OSHA compliance
• Adaptations that you would make for the place to business to avoid any OSHA ramifications
Sample Solution
After conducting a thorough head-to-toe investigation of the workplace as an OSHA inspector, I noticed several potential issues that could potentially lead to violations. Firstly, there was inadequate lighting in many areas of the workspace. This is concerning because it could cause employees to become distracted or disoriented while working and thus increase their risk for injury.
Additionally, I observed several pieces of machinery and equipment with exposed wires and loose parts that were at risk for causing electrical shocks or burns if mishandled by workers. Furthermore, many workspaces lacked adequate handrails when climbing ladders or stairs which poses a significant safety concern as falls can occur easily without proper stabilizing aids in place.
In terms of any past or current OSHA violations associated with the business, no such occurrences have been reported. However, there are certain preventative measures that should be taken in order to ensure compliance going forward:
• All exposed wiring and loose parts must be properly secured and insulated to eliminate electrical shock risks
• Illuminate dark work areas with proper lighting fixtures
• Install handrails on all staircases and ladders
• Provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to all workers
• Train staff on how to properly use tools and machines within the workplace
• Establish an emergency plan in case of accidents
Finally, it is recommended that the business conduct regular inspections of its premises so as to identify any other potential hazards early on before they can lead to further violations down the line. Additionally, enforcement of all safety policies should also be made mandatory so as to maintain compliance throughout operations . By adhering strictly these recommendations suggested above , your workplace will remain within OSHA compliance .
