Personality disorders

The DSM-5 lists ten specific personality disorders: paranoid,
schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic, avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (2007). A little over 9% of the U.S. population suffers from a personality
disorder, specifically avoidant and schizoid personality disorders which are the most frequent (Lezenweger,
Lane, Loranger, & Kessler, 2007). There are three clusters of personality disorders: odd or eccentric disorders;
dramatic, emotional or erratic disorders; and anxious or fearful disorders (2007).
Sammy Jones is a 17 year old Caucasian female who lives in a small town. Sammy grew up without a father
and has been very dependent on her mother since a little girl. She is very smart and has dreams of going to
college one day but her controlling mother wants her to stay in the area and take care of her younger brother
who is autistic. Sammy is in an on and off relationship with a man who is much older than her. He says he will
leave her if she goes to college, so she stays. Her boyfriend doesn’t treat her well, but she doesn’t feel like she
deserves any better and clings onto him. She is very easily persuaded by both her mother and her boyfriend
and always seeks validation in her decisions.
