Order Description
One of the few radical political slogans to come out of the European Middle Ages was the expression: “When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?” This saying summed up Thomas Paine’s view of human nature: human beings are by nature free and equal. This freedom and equality are enhanced by society. How does Paine distinguish society from government? Paine’s notion of government leads him to advocate a republic rather than a monarchy? Why?
Edmund Burke, on the other hand, advocates monarchy rather than a republic. Why? Also, why does Burke fear a republic?
