Guidelines for book review essay
Given that I have received some requests in this respect, I thought I would provide you with some basic guidelines on how to structure your book review essay. You do not necessarily need to structure your review essay as below, but for those of you with on experience in writing this type of assignments it might be helpful to think in these terms:
• Introduction: Outline the main area/discipline within which the book falls, and what is your general assessment of it; it might help if you also provide an outline of how your assessment will be substantiated in the rest of the text (max 200 words).
• Part I: Outline the arguments put forward by the author, with reference to both the relevant theory/theories discussed and the empirical material presented, as well as the ways in which you think the book contributes to the relevant literature on the subject (even if you may disagree with what the author says, if it has become a classic there might something in it that makes it valuable: outline this). Feel free to use direct quotes from the text in this part (of course adequately referenced). In this part you are expected to provide an analytical summary of what the book is about (about 600 words).
• Part II: Discuss what appear to you as the weaker points of the work: Are the assumption made by the author problematic? Are the arguments presented flawed? Is the empirical evidence in support of such arguments convincing (where appropriate)? Are there any works of which you are aware that significantly challenge the arguments presented in this book? Do you find them more or less convincing? You are expected to be addressing one or more of these questions in order to provide a critical appraisal of the book at hand (about 400 words)
• Conclusion: Summarise your critical appraisal of the book, with a specific emphasis on whether and how the text advances our understanding of financial crises in general and the latest financial crisis more specifically (about 300 words).
