The readings provide an overview of what is going on at postsecondary institutions and the barriers students
face. They provide statistics as well as student experiences and perspectives. Gregg (2007) stated, “One
purpose of this article is to stimulate thinking about adolescents and adults with LD across the spectrum of
ability and socioeconomic status within the current world context.” (p. 219). I would like to extend this aim
across the readings for this week. What did they make you think? What issues, concerns, ideas, etc. came to
mind as you read? For example, Marshak et al. (2010) provided many practical ideas and suggestions in their
Discussion and Implications section. Based on their findings, what did you think was significant that may have
not been addressed in the article? Consider the larger implications in relation to the climate of disability,
treatment of students, and legislative initiatives. Reflect on Cosenza (2014) description of the bias towards
non-traditional learners. In doing so, you may want to reflect on Mooney’s (2007) chapter and the sacrifices
Kent made for his academic successes.
