I have observed or experienced two significant challenges to equity in my learning environments: the Digital Divide and Curriculum Bias.

 

1. Challenge: The Digital Divide in Online Learning

 

The Digital Divide is the gap between those who have reliable, affordable access to modern information and communication technology and those who do not. In a remote or online learning context, this transforms into a fundamental barrier to participation.

Experience/Observation: During periods of mandatory remote learning, some peers lacked consistent high-speed internet, forcing them to use public Wi-Fi or cellular data. This resulted in missed live sessions, poor video quality during mandatory presentations, and an inability to access large learning resources, creating a systemic disadvantage compared to peers with stable home fiber connections.

 

Potential Solutions:

 

Subsidized Access and Equipment: Educational institutions should partner with local internet providers to offer subsidized or free high-speed broadband to enrolled students who qualify as low-income. Furthermore, institutions should provide loaner high-quality laptops and mobile hotspots with built-in data plans to ensure all students meet minimum technology standards for the course.
