Primary Resource Analyzes
Primary Resource Analyzes
Order Description
briefly summarize and analyze ONE primary resource that you believe will play a critical role in your paper. In your narrative examing this document you include
answers to the following questions (though not necessarily in this order): 1) when was the document created? 2) who is the author of the document? 3) what is the
document about? Offer a brief summary. 4) for what audience was the document written? how does the author try to convince his or her readers of something? 5) what
evidence in the document helps you to know why it was written? 6) what specific clues does the document provide about broader themes or events? 7) does the document
relate to themes from your readings or from lecture? does the source confirm, complicate, or refine secondary readings or materials? 8) consider the broader historical
context of this document. MAKE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR CLAIMS WITH EVIDENCE IN THE DOCUMENT, CITE SPECIFIC WORDS OR PHRASES TO DEMONSTRATE AND STRENGTHEN YOUR ARGUMENT.
As for the primary source analysis, start with the basics. Who were the Tradescants? What did they collect? Why did they collect? What is the document about? Why was
it written? Who is the intended audience? What is the broader historical context in which the document was produced? Keep yourself focused on this primary source and
why it was written.
