Problem Orientation and Psychological Distress Among Adolescents
Do Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies Mediate Their Relationship?
Select and read one peer-reviewed article. Ideally, this should be one on your topic that you may ultimately use in your final project. Highlight at least one threat to internal or external validity or reliability. Explore why this threat is problematic and how it could be remedied.
One threat to internal validity in this study is selection bias when it comes to participants. The participants for this study were recruited from a college campus in Egypt, so their responses may have been influenced by their immediate environment or culture. For instance, due to cultural norms, those from collectivist countries like Egypt may be more likely to value group interests and downplay individual needs compared to those from more individualistic societies like the US. As such, individuals from Egypt may be more likely than Americans to prioritize collective goals over personal development which could result in different responses on certain measures used within the research study such as perfectionism. Selection bias can also arise if a convenience sample was used instead of a random sample; because these samples are comprised of volunteers who choose themselves, they are not representative of the entire population being studied and thus limit generalizability of findings.
To address potential selection biases related to participant recruitment methods, future studies should use random sampling techniques rather than convenient sampling when selecting participants for their studies. Also diversely recruiting participants across multiple countries or regions with varying cultures will help reduce any potential cultural influences on survey responses that could introduce bias into results obtained from a single country’s population. Additionally, researchers should attempt to recruit an equal number of males and females for their studies since gender differences could potentially influence survey response scores depending on what kind of questions are being asked; having an even distribution would minimize any possible gender differences related variables under consideration within a given study design which would allow better interpretation results without risk of misinterpretation due to potential confounding factors associated with uneven gender representation among participant groups.. Finally using targeted sampling methods aimed at specific populations or locations where individuals have similar characteristics might further decrease researcher reliance upon convenience samples that can introduce additional sources of variance into data sets making them less reliable overall for making long term inferences about broader populations beyond those sampled initially—however caution must still be taken when doing so since targeted samples can potentially exclude important information useful for understanding wider contexts related phenomena under examination..
All together these steps should greatly reduce selection bias inherent within future studies examining relationships between perfectionism and psychological wellbeing while helping researchers acquire reliable data sets capable yielding meaningful insights into how best optimize mental health outcomes over time through lasting interventions tailored toward specific demographics identified through careful application appropriate statistical analysis techniques employed before drawing firm conclusions about larger trends observed throughout research designs involved
