Students must submit a 275 word abstract of their final research paper for approval. You are expected to have a working title and prepare an abstract of a paper (an academic essay). The abstract is a summary of your essay. It introduces readers to what you will be discussing. For an academic essay, the main things you should include in your abstract are what is the topic or problem you want to investigate (that is, why are you writing this essay?) and your preliminary arguments and conclusions regarding this issue, based on your review of existing literature on the topic. You will need to complete some preliminary research in order to draft this abstract, and have a clear idea of what you will be writing about for your academic essay. Hence, in this first assignment you should include at least two (2) references you are planning to use on your academic essay. You must include these two references (the citation) on your abstract assignment along with a very brief description of why each of these references is useful or relevant for the development of your argument in your academic essay- a sentence explaining what it's about and how it is relevant to your paper will suffice. As you will see in the instructions for the academic essay, for that one you will need at least 8 outside references. For this abstract assignment, you only need two. Identifying these two references at this stage will help you to get organized and will enable you to draft a better abstract. Needless to say, I am aware that, for this abstract assignment, you will not have yet completed your academic essay or your thorough research about your topic. This is the essay for which you prepared an abstract on week 4, so you will have been working on this several weeks ahead of the due date. You will need to apply the theories and concepts discussed in class and integrate class readings into your paper as you see fit and as they are relevant, as well as engage in critical thinking. Make sure you choose a topic that will enable you to do that. For this essay, in addition to relevant class readings, you must also cite at least 8 outside references (that is, references not assigned in the syllabus as required/mandatory reading). Citing books or articles assigned in other courses, do not count as part of your 8 outside sources. Although I encourage you to make connections with other courses you have taken, you need to broaden your knowledge by looking at new references. I cannot stress enough that you should cite readings from our course that you use in your academic essay, in addition to the outside sources; make sure you DO integrate class readings into the discussion/analysis of your topic. Also, no use of internet sources IS allowed; use only scholarly books and articles. Scholarly articles are the ones that are peer-reviewed. You must follow the guidelines in the handout on "Tips for writing academic essays". These guidelines are posted in the Course Material Folder, in the Lesson Tab. Remember to include your revised abstract at the beginning of the paper. Remember to follow the Chicago-Style citation format for in-text citations and the reference list.
