State that I am aware that social work is a very broad field and has different pathways i.e. working with vulnerable members of society such as children/families, adults and elderly and those with mental health problems. I feel that my specific area of interest is children and families. Include that I have completed a course in childcare learning and development and as a result of this I learned that social workers are important part of multi disciplinary team and I also gained information about the work they do in relation to children/families. Include that as part of my course I worked in nursery and primary schools which had children that required extra support, example those on the autism spectrum. This has sparked my desire to become a social worker even further. Include that at this stage I am volunteering in my local child contact centre in order to learn more and gain further insight into social work profession. Include that I am involved in direct work with service users, ie. parents and children. In my placement I am made familiar with different issues faced by families who are now using the service. Being a mother I realise how important this is for children to enjoy a relationship with both parents. At the centre I am ensuring that contact is supported throughout the session and that children are kept safe and away from harm i.e. safeguarding children. working with coordinators and other volunteers which helps me to improve my team-work skills. This is important in social work. volunteering in order to gain transferable skills required for social work career such as communication skills, active listening, empathy, ability to work as part of a team, ability to set boundaries and to improve my organisation and time keeping skills. Include that I am also starting to volunteer with Caudwell Children charity. This is an organisation which supports families and children with disabilities. Include that volunteering as a family support worker which mostly involves home visits. I am offering emotional and practical support to families in need. This means that helping them to access help and resources needed, for example sensory equipment or wheelchairs. I am also involved in signposting them to specialist sources of advice and helping them to access financial and funding information. Often I am a listening ear and while trivial it makes a difference to those in need of help. motivated by my desire to help others. Skills gained during placement are invaluable. Briefly mention that I am billingual, i.e. speaking both english and russian languages and I feel that this can be a very valuable asset in a social work profession as we helping those from different backgrounds.
